When I decided to launch my blog on June 1st, 2019, I was reminded that this would have been Amelia Sharer’s 5th birthday. I don’t know the Sharer’s personally, but I know their story through my sister who is a personal friend.
In 2018 four year old Amelia went to the hospital with a fever. The family would then find out that she had stage IV kidney cancer. The form of cancer is “a very rare, aggressive form of pediatric cancer more commonly diagnosed in children two-years-old and under,” a malignant rhabdoid tumor.
In March of 2019, the beautiful butterfly left this Earth.
Amelia’s parents started the Amelia M. Sharer Foundation in 2019. “Our mission at the Amelia M. Sharer Foundation is to help ensure that no child is denied emergency medical transportation due to a lack of medical insurance.” While Amelia was fighting against her illness, and during a brief lapse in coverage, the Sharer’s spent 6 hours waiting for transport. It wasn’t until a selfless group of EMT’s heard her story and drove to them, that she was then transported.
